Personal Statement
My interest in photography began about 16 years ago as a hobby taking photographs of my children. I then became more interested in the subject and wanted to learn a lot more about this creative area.
Currently I have been attending a BA (hons) photography course and have gained a much more in-depth knowledge and understanding of the techniques and skills required in becoming a good photographer.
One of the projects I enjoyed most was the Book project which I titled “What the eye dosen’t see”, The idea for this book was born out of my phobia for creepy-crawlies. In order to overcome this insane fear of these highly developed and interesting members of our world, I decided to approach them through the safety of my camera lens. The more photographs I took, the more fascinated I became with my subjects. After concentrating at first on native species I visited numerous wildlife parks and zoos in search of interesting insects. The camera lens enabled me to achieve detailed images of insects, which allowed me to recognise their special kind of beauty and efficiency, and also to notice what the naked eye doesn’t usually see. I think it is amazing and interesting what can be seen through a microlense. This type of photography interests me because of the detail that can be captured such as the hair, skin and other parts of the insects body that normally is not easy to capture visually.
I have enjoyed discovering the many genres of photography, such as advertising, macro, architectual photography,Landscape photography and portrait.
I am inspired by the work of photographers such as Nick Knight, Amsel Adams, David Ward, David Wilson and especially Lois Greenfield. I love her images of flying bodies as compositional elements. She wanted impose the medium of photography, to produce images of dances that captured the feeling an excitement of the movement, which inspired me to do my dance and movement project.
I have also done some voluntary work in a primary school, once a week, working with children between 2-4 years of age, for the duration of one year.
and I still help out at the school by taking photographs of events and activities.
Currently I have successfully completed a BA (hons) 2.1 Degree in Photography.
